E-Lab 5.1.5 - Troubleshooting IOS Boot Failure This lab will check and document the configuration register settings related to boot method, configure the router to boot from NVRAM, and reload the router. Step 1 Enter privileged EXEC mode. Step 2 Enter into global configuration mode. Step 3 Set the hostname to Oslo. Step 4 Enter the configuration register setting of 0x2142 to tell the router to ignore the router configuration at boot time. Step 5 Go (exit) to privileged EXEC mode. Step 6 Save the current configuration. Step 7.1 Reload the router. Step 7.2 Type n and press Enter to skip the setup dialog. Step 8.1 Enter privileged EXEC mode. Step 8.2 View the running configuration file. Step 9 Reload the saved configuration using the copy command. Step 10 Enter show version at the command prompt. The router will return information about the IOS that is running in RAM. Once the command is entered, examine the config-register setting at the end of the output. It shows a configuration setting of 0x2142. This is password recovery mode and is why the router started with an empty configuration. Step 11 To set the configuration register to specify normal operation, enter global configuration mode. Step 12 Enter a configuration register setting of 0x2102 to direct the router to load the startup configuration from NVRAM as usual. Step 13 Go (exit) to privileged EXEC mode. Step 14 Save the current configuration. Step 15.1 Reload the router. Step 15.2 Enter privileged EXEC mode. Step 16 Verify the configuration register setting.
